Game 1/6 FR Advance Review June 2013
There is no way to avoid the Advance variation after committing to the French Defence but there is no need to follow the main line with 3...c5. This game is background to the less well trodden path 3...b6 which GM Short plays from time to time.
The feature game is a key victory by the English GM that caught my attention as I do my preparation/update on the French Defence. Ex-World Champion Khalifman was on the white side of the feature game.

This is a key game showing black's potential in the 3...b6 line. White got a bit behind in development which allowed Short to favorably open up the position.

Both sides have pawn weaknesses but black's rooks are more active. What do you recommend for black now?
